Research connects live simulation data to navigable Unreal Engine scenes

Published and reviewed 2026-10-27 · Primary source dated 2026-10-19

A research pipeline links ParaView Catalyst, ANARI and Unreal Engine 5 to explore large simulation datasets without intermediate disk files.

Availability & maturity

Research demonstration described in a paper. A generally available, supported product and reproducible installation have not been verified.

What is documented

The authors describe an in-memory USD streaming pipeline using a modified ANARI-USD device, ZeroMQ and JuSync middleware with an Unreal Engine 5 plugin. They report a JURECA-DC demonstration with free-electron-laser simulation data containing tens of millions of particles, producing camera-navigable scenes.

Why it matters

This is a concrete research direction for traversing large physical-system datasets rather than viewing only static output. Decoupling simulation from visualization could let people explore results while computation continues.

Limits and unverified claims

The paper reports a demonstration, not independently validated production readiness. Camera navigation does not establish semantic zoom, useful cross-scale context, collaboration or improved human decisions. We have not independently tested performance, latency, reproducibility or usability. VR, AR and holographic-display support are not established by this report.
